Following the official launch of the production of Jobseekers back in February, we are delighted to finally reveal details for the auditions for the pilot episode filming this summer in Derby! After coverage of the sitcom landed in the Derby Telegraph and on BBC Radio Derby, the sitcom team have been inundated with support and we’ve received many applications for roles in the pilot. We can now reveal that auditions are set to take place on Friday 24th May and Saturday 25th May at Derby Theatre, Theatre Walk, Eagle Centre, Derby DE1 2NF. We are now welcoming applications for the roles listed below:

Ben (25-35)

Known as Cooper to his friends, Ben is a former middle manager made redundant who has now returned to his hometown of Derby to try his hand at finding work. A dreamer with a fear of under achieving, his ambition to find work in any capacity is match only by his love for ex-girlfriend Alexandra. The more straight laced of the trio, Ben is thrown back into his old ways as he hangs out once again with fellow Jobseekers Gaz and Josh whilst living with his Gran.

Gaz (25-35)

The joker of the pack, Gaz is a hardened Jobseeker who bumps into old friend Ben Cooper in the job centre queue. Employed as an apprentice straight from school, he worked as a joiner before losing his job after hitting his boss. His main weakness is his temper, most likely stemming from his family loving their dogs more than him. His friendship with Josh, another close friend, keeps him entertained whilst struggling for work and dealing with is partner Joanne.

Josh (25-35)

A messy drop out with little prospects, Josh is the salt of the earth and just as simple. Dropping out of his Travel & Tourism course at college, Josh went on his way as a jobseekers, living his days with a general lack of awareness of anything going on around him. Lazy and messy, he has no real direction except for harbouring a desire to be a DJ and a BMX pro. Living purely in the moment without thinking ahead, he provides much amusement for Gaz and embarrassment for Ben.

Anthony (35-55)

Made redundant from his position at the job centre, the recently divorced and heavily in debt Anthony is our first window into the world of Jobseekers. Down on his luck and still falling, he’s the latest casualty of the recession but won’t go down without a half-hearted attempt at a fight.

Alexandra (25-30)

An up-and-coming lawyer from a rich adopted family, Alexandra is a woman on her way up with her only drawback being her struggle to live up to her parents’ expectations. She’s also Ben’s ex-girlfriend and whilst they’re still on good terms, she’s definitely a bit wary of his feelings towards her. Their paths cross as Ben looks for a new job with her father and as they attempt to reconcile on an ill-fated night out.

Joanne (25-35)

Working as a nurse, Joanne spends most of her time either working or trying to deal with her mortgage and difficult partner Gaz. She’s trying her best to support him through difficult times and the extent to which she goes puts even him on edge. Plain but sympathetic, she’d like stability but carries on her way the same as always.

Jim Green (30-50)

Also known as Spider, Jim is a wannabe entrepreneur. Acting as the manager of a window company, he also moonlights as a barman. Sleazy, sweaty and very sure of himself, he’s the typical used car salesman but behind that front hides his family problems with a wife and kids that have long since left him.

Maria (20-30)

Unemployed and spending her spare time as an artist with a lot of talent, we find Maria as one of several unlucky recruits for Jim Green’s borderline bogus window sales company. She’s stuck in a rut looking for any job she can get but is easy going despite her work and paying the rent issues.

Mark (25-40)

Another recruit for the window company, Mark has a short fuse and isn’t buying what Jim AKA Spider is selling. Despite his professional appearance he’s still on the dole, trying to make ends meet for him and his girlfriend. Angry and frustrated with his situation, he’s trying to sort his life out to no avail.

Job Centre Manager (30-50) (Male or Female)

Calm, collected and ever so slightly annoying, the clean cut Job Centre manager shows a longstanding employee the door on the same day our Jobseeking trio are in the building. A jobsworth really but views his/her position with high regard.

Doormen Frank & Stan (25-40)

Up for a laugh but serious when it comes to work, Frank and Stan are faced with Ben, Gaz and Josh as the trio arrive for a night at a wine bar with disastrous results. They’re both stocky and are prone to aggression when pushed.

To apply for any of the above roles, please visit www.jobseekerssitcom.com and head over to the Actors Wanted section where you can fill out your details whilst listing the date and role you’d like to audition for. Alternatively you can e-mail the Jobseekers team at jobseekerscom@hotmail.com. We can’t wait to hear from the would be stars of Jobseekers and look forward to meeting you at the auditions!

Please note that whilst these are the main roles we are auditioning for, there are other ways that actors interested in the sitcom can be involved and we have a whole selection of speaking and non-speaking roles to cast. We welcome actors from across the country to apply for roles within the sitcom pilot. Filming for the pilot is tentatively schedule for July 15th-July 21st in Derby. Unfortunately we are unable to offer a wage for any of the cast or crew roles as this is an ultra low budget pilot episode however we can offer expenses alongside showreel material as well as an invite to the premiere. You’ll also be a part of a pilot episode and whilst we can’t guarantee Jobseekers will get commissioned, we hope that the pilot will receive some good attention during production and distribution. This is a passion project for all involved with every penny going into making this pilot happen. Thank you for your interest and support!

Our entry for this year’s London Sci-Fi 48 Hour Film Challenge marks the 3rd time we’ve taken part in this exciting competition and each year we’ve strived to build and improve on the last. For those of you not in the know, the London Sci-Fi Film Festival holds a competition each year allowing filmmakers to create, shoot, edit and deliver a 5 minute short within a 2 day time frame. It’s exhausting but always fun and rewarding with no sleep a near guarantee! This year the judging panel for the films that make it into the final out of 180 entries consists of Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness) amongst others, making it one of the most hotly contested film competitions in the country!

YSP Media once again came together to produce ‘The Open Door‘, with our story this year revolving around a not-too-distant future where the next level of humans have started to come into existence in an increasingly desolate world. Creating this world was a lot of fun and we were thrilled to have the support of our cast and crew to make it happen. Whilst we weren’t shortlisted for the competition, we’re immensely proud of the film and have been buoyed by the audience response to the film online.

In terms of the competition, each team in the contest is given a title, prop, line of dialogue and an optional scientific theme. In our case these were ‘The Open Door’ as a title, a plastic bag with paper being tipped out as a prop and our line being, “You won’t believe this, but I think I have one in the boot!”. We opted to not fully use the theme, instead giving it a little nod in a line and with a few prop references. Our entry was directed by Christopher Bevan with the film’s director of photography Karl Poyzer also writing the script during the challenge! The Open Door stars Carl Bryan & Chloe Varney (making their YSP debuts!) alongside YSP stalwarts Joseph Maudsley and Lucy Varney. You can check out the full list of the amazing cast and crew involved on the film’s profile here on the YSP website.

That’s a wrap! After 3 days filming our next short Love & Other Chairs has just completed principal photography and we’re thrilled with the results. It’s been a long journey and after a successful crowdfunding campaign earlier this year, we were pleased to be able to bring together an enthusiastic and talented cast and crew to help create this darkly comic short. Love & Other Chairs was written by Luke Kondor and directed by Christopher Bevan and is the story of Julian (Mark Drake), a lonely, depressed wreck of a man living in a house full of chairs. As Julian sits in his kitchen drinking tea, he recollects the time he first moved into the house and got married, and how his beautiful wife Kate (Faith Knight) turned into a chair.

It’s always a pleasure to work with the our team and this shoot was no exception. Friday commenced with nearly our cast, crew and 15 extras descending on the Traveller’s Rest pub in Derby and it was a brilliant atmosphere on set with everyone giving their all. Similarly on Saturday and Sunday when filming in Hilton, we had just as good a working environment and thanks to this we’ve been able to create some truly lovely material we’re all proud of.

Thanks go to our cast and crew for the tireless work and of course all our IndieGoGo backers for making this all possible. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for the latest set photos and expect a teaser trailer fairly soon!

It’s almost a year since we began filming our short film Caught in the Headlights and since then we’ve been blown away by the response to the film. After picking up several awards and nominations in 2012, our first festival of 2013 was the prestigious Watersprite Film Festival held in the beautiful University of Cambridge. Nominated for best editing (Silvia de Abreu) and best soundtrack (Jonathan Armandary), the film screened alongside an array of wonderful shorts from all over the world and was one of just 22 nominees out of nearly 250 submissions. The standard of films were high and it was a privelege for us to be nominated and to be able to attend such a fantastic film festival. The awards ceremony itself was hosted by the wonderful actor Michael Smiley (Kill List) with guests including the equally magnificent Olivia Colman (Tyrannosaur) and Neil Gaiman (Sandman, American Gods). Held in the Cambridge Union, the ceremony itself was both enjoyable and inspiring with an amazing atmosphere and many filmmakers attending from around the world.

Throughout the weekend festival goers were treated to talks and seminars on subjects ranging from film financing to editing to visual effects with notable guests speakers including Olivia Colman and Eddie Redmayne. As filmmakers we strive to create the best work we possibly can and thanks to the efforts of the whole Caught in the Headlights cast and crew as well as the support of our IndieGoGo backers, we’ve been able to take this film to festivals and to a wider audience as we had hoped. Of our team, the festival was attended by director Christopher Bevan, editor Silvia de Abreu, director of photography Karl Poyzer and composer Jonathan Armandary and it was brilliant to be able to reunite some of the team at an event such as this. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this for making it possible and thanks also go to the Watersprite Festival team for laying on such an amazing weekend.

As part of our drive to work with exciting new writers, YSP Media is please to announce that it is currently in pre-production on the pilot episode of Jobseekers, a new sitcom set to be filmed in the city this summer. Written by Lee Dilley, Paul J Farrell & Beth Foster-Hunter, Jobseekers is the story of a group of three friends reunited after years apart and searching for work. For this Midlands born trio, job seeking is a full time career.

The bubble has burst, the recession has taken its toll and big city dwelling ‘middle manager’ Ben is forced back into his old way of life in a socially dwindling Derby. Meanwhile an old and very close friend, Gaz, while struggling to find a focus in life finds himself potentially hindered, but more probably entertained by Josh. Josh is the salt of the earth and just as simple. As they battle through life trying to find one, they find confusion, awkwardness and the bizarre at every turn. In short, they’re the unemployed who bring a new meaning to the term job seeking.

Jobseekers co-writer Lee Dilley was heavily influenced by his own experiences when working on the script. “During my employment I struggled with making ends meet and would snatch at any job opportunity that came up, most evident with me having nine temp jobs within one year ranging from a meter reader to a play worker. I recall applying for 120 jobs within one week and only receiving one response back for a shelf-stacking job, that stated I was over qualified. Jobseekers is a very British comedy but revolves around a world recession and, as such, has got a lot of heart.”

Director Christopher Bevan set to helm the first episode of Jobseekers. His most recent short film ‘Caught in the Headlights’, filmed on location in Derby, went on to receive several awards and nominations at film festivals around the country. Last year he directed a documentary charting the Olympic Torch’s journey through Derbyshire. Of ‘Jobseekers’, Christopher said;

“I’m delighted to be involved in Jobseekers and after first reading the script, I was instantly hooked. The writing team have really developed something that I think a lot of people will be able to relate to and there’s a wealth of hilarious, outrageous and touching moments that I think our audience will be able to connect with. I can’t wait to begin casting in the next few months, we’ll be aiming to shoot pilot episode ‘The Suit’ this summer right here in Derby”.

Currently attached to star in one of the leading roles is Derby born Joseph Maudsley, an actor with a wide range of feature film, short film and theatre credits, most recently appearing on stage at the Guildhall in Oddsocks production of ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’.

Auditions for the many roles in Jobseekers are due to be held in Derby in the coming weeks and months. To keep up to date with all the latest updates, casting news and audition announcements, please head to the Official Jobseekers Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JobseekersOfficial.
